Etosha National Park is one of Africa's finest self-drive safari destinations โ no guide required, no fixed schedule, just you and a car driving some of the most productive wildlife corridors on the continent. Spread across 22,270 kmยฒ, the park is built around a vast white salt pan that draws extraordinary concentrations of animals to its fringes during the dry season.
This guide covers everything you need to plan and execute a perfect self-drive safari in Etosha: the best waterholes, the three NWR restcamps, the rules you must know, and exactly how to make the most of every hour inside the park.
The Basics
Etosha has two main entrance gates: Anderson Gate in the south (closest to Windhoek and Outjo) and King Nehale Gate in the northeast. Most self-drive visitors enter via Anderson Gate and drive east through the park over 2โ4 days, exiting at Von Lindequist Gate near Namutoni.
You do not need a guide. All roads within the park are open to self-drive visitors with a standard 2WD or 4x4. A regular sedan is fine for the main tourist routes โ the roads are gravel but well-maintained and clearly marked.
You may not exit your vehicle at any point except at designated picnic sites and restcamp areas. Getting out of your car anywhere else in the park โ even briefly for a photo โ is a serious offence and genuinely dangerous. Lion, leopard, cheetah, and spotted hyena are all active during the day.
Park Rules You Must Know
- Gates open at sunrise and close at sunset โ you must be back at your restcamp before the gate closes or face a heavy fine
- Speed limit is 60 km/h on all park roads โ strictly enforced by rangers
- No driving at night except within restcamp boundaries
- No off-road driving under any circumstances
- No feeding animals โ even fruit left on the roof of your car counts
- No hooting, shouting, or playing music loudly near animals
- No drones without a special permit (very rarely granted)
The Best Waterholes
Etosha's secret is its waterholes. During the dry season, every animal in the park must visit a waterhole daily. If you sit patiently at the right waterhole at the right time, the wildlife comes to you. Here are the standouts:
The Three NWR Restcamps
Etosha's three NWR restcamps are the only places you can stay inside the park. They range from basic camping to comfortable chalets with restaurants, pools, and the famous floodlit waterholes. Book as far ahead as possible โ they sell out 3โ6 months ahead in peak season.
Book your Etosha restcamp now โ All three camps sell out months ahead in peak season. Secure your dates before they're gone.

Night 1: Okaukuejo
Enter via Anderson Gate and drive slowly east, stopping at every waterhole. Arrive at Okaukuejo by 4pm. After settling in, head straight to the floodlit waterhole and stay until at least 10pm โ this is when black rhino typically arrive.
Night 2: Halali
Up before sunrise. Drive east stopping at Salvadora (the best rhino waterhole), then Gemsbokvlakte and Rietfontein. Arrive Halali for lunch and the swimming pool. Late afternoon game drive around Halali area. Night: sit at the floodlit waterhole.
Night 3: Namutoni
Morning drive through the central pan area โ the open terrain here gives the best lion sighting opportunities. Arrive Namutoni midday. Afternoon: Fischer's Pan and Chudop waterhole. Evening: the Fort's veranda bar at sunset is one of Etosha's finest moments.
The absolute best times are the two hours after gate opening (sunrise) and the two hours before gate closing (sunset). During midday heat (11amโ3pm) most large mammals seek shade and are hard to spot. Use that time to rest at camp, swim, and eat โ then head out again for the afternoon session.
Entry Fees & Costs
As of 2025, NWR charges N$200 per person per day plus N$10 per vehicle per day for park entry. This is collected at the gate and is separate from accommodation costs. Keep your receipt โ rangers do check it inside the park.
Fuel is available at Okaukuejo, Halali, and Namutoni restcamps, but prices are slightly higher than outside the park. Fill up in Outjo or Tsumeb before entering.
