Best Time to Visit
Namibia (2025)

Namibia is one of the few destinations in Africa where there is no truly bad time to visit — but the experience changes dramatically depending on the season. Wildlife viewing, dune colours, road conditions, costs, and crowd levels all shift month by month. This guide breaks it all down so you can plan the perfect trip.

The short answer: May to October is Namibia's peak and best season overall. But depending on what you want to see and do, the shoulder months and even the "green season" have their own magic.

When to Visit Etosha

Etosha is best visited during the dry season (May–October) when animals congregate around the limited water sources. The waterholes at Okaukuejo, Halali, and Namutoni are packed with elephant, lion, giraffe, zebra, and black rhino — especially at night under the floodlights.

In the wet season (Dec–Mar), the pan fills with water and animals spread out across the park making wildlife harder to spot — though the birdlife becomes extraordinary, with vast flocks of flamingo on the pan.

💡 Insider tip

June and July are peak months but also when NWR restcamps fill fastest. Book Okaukuejo and Halali at least 3 months ahead for these months, or you may find yourself camping outside the park gates and missing the famous night waterhole experience.

Book your Etosha accommodation now — NWR restcamps sell out months ahead in peak season. Secure your dates before they're gone.

When to Visit Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei can be visited year-round, but the experience changes significantly by season. The dunes are always spectacular, but the light and temperature dramatically affect the visit.

May–September (Recommended)

Cool mornings make the dune climb comfortable. Sunrise light turns the dunes deep red-orange. Comfortable temperatures allow extended time in Deadvlei. This is the classic Sossusvlei experience.

October–April (Challenging but cheaper)

Temperatures inside the vlei regularly exceed 45°C by midday. You must complete your dune climb and Deadvlei walk by 9am. The advantage: lower lodge prices, zero crowds at sunrise, and occasionally dramatic storm clouds that create extraordinary photography conditions.

When to Visit the Coast

Swakopmund and the Skeleton Coast are moderated by the cold Benguela Current and can be visited year-round. The coast stays cool (15–22°C) even in summer, making it a welcome escape from the desert heat. However, the famous Namibian fog is most common in December–February.

For sandboarding, skydiving, and quad biking, May–October gives the most comfortable conditions. Cape Cross Seal Reserve can be visited any time — the seals are there year-round, with pup season (November–January) being particularly special.

How Season Affects Your Budget

Expect to pay 30–40% more for accommodation in peak season (June–September) compared to the green season (January–March). Car hire rates also rise during peak season, and the most popular routes sell out completely. If budget is your priority, April, October, and November offer the best balance of good conditions and reasonable prices.
